Life Sentence for Second-Degree Murder

Bason, aged 35, has pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in the case. He remains in jail awaiting sentencing, which has been scheduled for July 30. According to the plea agreement, Bason will be given a life sentence with a chance for parole after 15 years. It is yet to be determined whether the time he has already spent behind bars will count towards his sentence.

Details of the Murder Plot

Authorities revealed that Bason and another unidentified individual pulled up alongside Xu as she was getting out of her car. Bason was identified as the gunman through a DNA test of an expended shell casing. Investigations further uncovered communications between Bason and Chia discussing the murder plot.

Chia, who was Xu’s boyfriend of 10 years, was found dead by suicide shortly after being booked into Santa Rita Jail on murder charges. Police believe Chia stood to gain $12 million to $14 million in life insurance and assets from Xu’s passing.

Evidence Against Chia

Police presented evidence that Chia and Bason had meticulously planned the murder, including the day, time, and place of the killing. Chia had driven Xu to the agreed-upon location where Bason carried out the shooting. Despite denying any knowledge of Bason, Chia was found to have known the gunman, adding to the case against him.
