Brattleboro authorities have reported an incident where a 39-year-old man named George Tarbell from Brattleboro was arrested after allegedly spitting at a police officer and later punching another officer in the face.

A man who was arrested on Thursday was charged with assaulting officers as they tried to take him into custody. At approximately 7:36 a.m. Thursday morning, Brattleboro police officers responded to an altercation on Flat St, later learning that someone had threatened an individual with a knife. According to police, 39-year-old George Tarbell of Brattleboro was identified as the suspect, fleeing from officers on Canal St before being stopped. However, he was able to briefly avoid police again in a brief chase down an embankment and through the woods. During transport to the Brattleboro Police Department, Tarbell spat at an officer. He later reportedly punched an escorting officer in the face in the cell block area. Tarbell was charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and assault on a protected professional, among others.
