LONDON (AP) – A New York City police recruit tragically passed away on Wednesday after experiencing a medical emergency at a training facility in the Bronx, just days before his scheduled graduation as an officer.

The 33-year-old, who has been identified as probationary police officer Edgar Ordonez, collapsed at 11:30 a.m. while at Rodman’s Neck, an operations base utilized by police for weapons and tactical training, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department revealed. He was pronounced dead shortly after at a nearby hospital.

The cause of death is currently unknown, as it did not involve any gunfire, according to the spokesperson. Authorities are investigating the possibility that he may have suffered from heat stroke or a heart attack. The National Weather Service had issued a heat advisory for the Bronx and other parts of the city on Wednesday, warning that the heat index could reach as high as 99 F (37.2 C).

“Our hearts are heavy as we pay tribute to our fallen comrade, Probationary Police Officer Edgar Ordonez,” stated Police Commissioner Edward Caban in a statement on X. “We tragically lost Edgar earlier today, just a few days before he was due to graduate and join his fellow officers in safeguarding New York City.”

“He possessed the determination and drive required to become a New York City police officer, and he was on the verge of hitting the streets to make a difference in protecting our city,” expressed PBA President Patrick Hendry in a statement released by the union on X.

A video shared by the NYPD on X showed police recruits, officers, and members of the public lining the streets in New York in a heartfelt tribute to Ordonez on Wednesday afternoon.
