LONDON (AP) – In a devastating turn of events, a New York City police recruit, identified as probationary police officer Edgar Ordonez, tragically passed away on Wednesday after experiencing a medical emergency during a training session at a facility in the Bronx. The 33-year-old recruit was just days away from graduating and fulfilling his dream of becoming a police officer.

The incident occurred at Rodman’s Neck, a training base utilized by the New York Police Department for tactical and weapons training. Ordonez suddenly lost consciousness at 11:30 a.m. and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Authorities have ruled out any involvement of firearms in Ordonez’s passing and are currently investigating the possibility of heat stroke or a heart attack as the cause. The National Weather Service had issued a heat advisory for the Bronx on the day of the tragic incident, with temperatures soaring to a scorching 99 F (37.2 C).

Police Commissioner Edward Caban expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Ordonez, stating, “Our hearts are heavy as we honor our fallen brother, Probationary Police Officer Edgar Ordonez. We tragically lost Edgar earlier today, just a few days before he was set to graduate and join his fellow Finest protecting New York City.”

A poignant video shared by the NYPD on social media captured the emotional tribute to Ordonez, with police recruits, officers, and members of the public lining the streets of New York to honour his memory.
