Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office has provided further details regarding a devastating multi-vehicle fiery collision that occurred on Interstate 85. On the evening of July 10th, at 6:56 p.m., a tractor-trailer traveling northbound in the construction zone on I-85 at mile marker 96 near Gaffney, South Carolina, veered off course. The rig struck a guard rail on the right side of the road before breaching the concrete barrier separating the northbound and southbound lanes, as reported by Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler.

The tractor-trailer then collided with a 2021 Nissan Rogue Sport and another tractor-trailer heading southbound. Tragically, the driver of the Nissan Rogue, identified as 73-year-old Donald Charles Harwood from Greenville, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene. The severity of the crash led to the closure of all lanes on I-85 while fire crews battled to extinguish the vehicle fire in the southbound lanes near Exit 96, as captured by SCDOT traffic cameras.

Coroner Fowler expressed concerns about the ongoing construction zones along I-85 in Cherokee County, highlighting the dangers they pose to motorists.
