Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Two adolescents have been apprehended in connection with a string of apparently indiscriminate drive-by shootings in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incidents resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to two others, as announced by local law enforcement on Thursday. The series of five shootings took place between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday and were believed to be related due to the random nature of shots fired at vehicles and cyclists from a moving vehicle, stated Charlotte-Mecklenburg Deputy Chief Tonya Arrington during a news conference.

Law enforcement officers on patrol at the sites of the shootings spotted a suspicious vehicle on Thursday, leading to the discovery of a 16-year-old boy inside with a stolen firearm. Following an interrogation and subsequent arrest of the teenager, an 18-year-old male was also taken into custody later that day. No additional suspects remain at large.

Deputy Chief Arrington commended the officers’ efforts, attributing the successful arrests to “good, old-fashioned police work” and the keen instincts of the officers involved. She mentioned, “It’s just one of those gut instincts that you have sometimes as an officer.”

According to Arrington, the younger suspect had intentions to carry on with his violent acts, a scenario that was thankfully thwarted by the timely intervention of law enforcement. “Thanks to the great work of our officers and detectives, they were able to prevent additional harm to innocent victims,” she stated.

The 16-year-old suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, will face charges of first-degree murder and has been remanded to the Department of Juvenile Justice. The older suspect, identified as Carlos Roberto Diaz, will be charged with first-degree murder, felony conspiracy to commit murder, five counts of attempted murder, two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle, two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, as indicated by police authorities.

As of Thursday afternoon, it remained unclear whether Diaz had legal representation. Police officials continued their investigation into the weapons used during the shootings, refraining from specifying the driver of the vehicle involved.

The initial shooting took place around 1 a.m. when Mustaffa Muhammad, 58, was fatally shot in a vehicle travelling northbound on Statesville Avenue. Shortly after, a bicyclist was targeted but escaped injury at the intersection of Lasalle Street and Newland Road. Subsequent incidents involved gunfire directed at a vehicle near Interstate 77 on Lasalle Street and another group on Catherine Simmons Drive, resulting in a female victim being hit while inside a nearby residence.

The final shooting occurred in the Steel Creek area, where a bicyclist sustained injuries in the 100 block of Hillary Circle. During the investigation, officers discovered a house that had also been struck by gunfire.

Arrington disclosed that forensics have linked three of the shootings to the crime spree. She emphasised that investigators have found no evidence of gang affiliation in connection with the incidents and that the motive behind the shootings remains unclear.

“We’re still asking the same questions — why would two juveniles engage in this type of behavior on random victims?” she pondered. “You know, it’s one thing when we have a shooting spree between two, maybe rival gangs, neighborhood gangs, beefs. But this is … just completely unusual.”
