UNDATED (WJON News) — After years of investigation, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office has finally closed the case of Baby Jane Doe. The Sheriff’s Office recently announced that they have successfully identified the parents of the deceased infant, leading to the conclusion of this long-standing mystery.
The case dates back to April 3rd, 1980, when deputies responded to a call at what is now 250th Street, west of County Road 136 in St. Augusta. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered the body of a deceased infant, later identified as Baby Jane Doe, located approximately five feet off the roadway. Despite an autopsy conducted by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office the following day, the cause of death could not be determined.
In 2018, the sheriff’s office, in collaboration with the BCA, took the initiative to exhume the infant’s remains in order to obtain a DNA profile. Subsequently, in 2020, investigators sought the assistance of Parabon NanoLabs to aid in identifying the parents of Baby Jane Doe. It wasn’t until 2021 that a breakthrough occurred, as DNA obtained from an adult female during a prior autopsy was compared to that of the deceased infant, revealing that the female was indeed the mother of Baby Jane Doe.
Earlier this year, following further investigation, it was established that the infant’s father could potentially be one of three men. The Sheriff’s Office proceeded to collect DNA samples from one of the men, who willingly consented to providing a sample. The BCA’s analysis confirmed a match between the DNA of Baby Jane Doe, the mother, and the man, identifying him as the biological father of the infant.

Throughout May and June of this year, deputies conducted interviews with the father, who cooperated with the investigation and denied any knowledge of the child. Despite their efforts, the Sheriff’s Office was unable to establish conclusive evidence pointing to a person responsible for the death of Baby Jane Doe. As a result, they have made the decision to close the case.
The closure of this decades-old case marks a significant milestone for the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and brings some closure to the tragic story of Baby Jane Doe. While the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death may never be fully understood, the identification of her parents represents a step towards resolution and justice for this long-forgotten case..
