In a tragic turn of events after a peaceful month, violence reared its ugly head once again in St James on Tuesday evening with a triple homicide at a popular hangout spot across the main road from the Canterbury community in Montego Bay.

The victims, all hailing from Canterbury (12 ½ Upper King Street), have been identified as 25-year-old Antonio Williams, 17-year-old student Jaydon Bennett, and 62-year-old David West.

Eyewitness Account of the Incident

According to an alleged eyewitness, who was present at the scene, the three men were among a group of individuals at the hangout spot when they were ambushed by gunmen around 6:30 p.m. Gunfire erupted, shattering the peace of the evening.

One witness, who sought refuge during the chaos, reported seeing a lone shooter fleeing the scene and jumping into a waiting white car before speeding off.

Impact on the Canterbury Community

Canterbury, once feared as Montego Bay’s most notorious community, had enjoyed a six-year streak without any murders until this tragic incident. The return of violence has left residents shaken and on edge.

Crime Statistics in St James

St James has been grappling with a surge in violent crimes in recent years, with at least 76 murders recorded since the beginning of the year. This grim statistic solidifies St James’ position as the nation’s leader in murders.

Recent police crime data revealed that Westmoreland (57) and St Andrew South (51) follow closely behind St James in terms of murder rates for the year 2024.

National Murder Toll

As of last Saturday, the national murder toll stood at 602, marking a 14.5% decrease compared to the previous year. While the decline is a positive sign, the recent triple homicide in St James serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement authorities in combating violent crime.
