A defendant involved in a shooting incident opted to forgo a preliminary hearing in front of DC Superior Court Judge Heidi Herrmann on the 10th of July.

Antonio Lucas, aged 46, faces charges of aggravated assault knowingly while armed and possession of a firearm in connection with a violent crime, following an alleged non-fatal shooting on the 3800 block of Jay Street, NE, on May 2. The incident resulted in injuries to one individual.

Court documents indicate that an individual, identified as Lucas, engaged in a disagreement with the victim over a vehicle. Despite the victim’s attempt to defuse the situation by walking away, Lucas persisted in following. The confrontation escalated, resulting in the victim being shot in the right thigh. The victim then sought help from law enforcement and fled the scene.

The victim later positively identified the defendant in a photo lineup, expressing certainty that Lucas was the perpetrator, as detailed in court records.

During the hearing, Bruce Cooper, Lucas’ legal representative, informed the court of the decision to waive the preliminary hearing and requested his client’s release pending further proceedings.

However, the prosecution objected, citing concerns about the defendant’s potential threat to the community.

Judge Herrmann concurred with the prosecution’s stance and ordered the defendant to remain in custody.

The case is scheduled to reconvene on the 18th of July before DC Superior Court Judge Jennifer Di Toro.
