Memphis Police have identified 18-year-old Vontavious Muirhead and a 13-year-old boy as suspects in a deadly shooting that took place on July 2 near Memphis International Airport.

Previous Run-Ins with the Law

ABC24 has uncovered that Muirhead, who is facing charges in connection with the recent crime spree and shooting, had been granted diversion and probation just a few weeks prior to the incident.

Court records show that on June 13, 2024, Muirhead was granted diversion and placed on one year probation for a theft charge. As part of this case, charges related to guns and drugs were dismissed.

An affidavit from the previous case revealed that Muirhead was found asleep in a stolen car on May 6, 2024, with two guns in his lap, along with marijuana and a scale in the vehicle. Further investigation indicated that at least one of the guns was also stolen.

Despite this incident, Muirhead was released on diversion and probation on June 13, only to be implicated in the deadly shooting just over two weeks later.

Crime Spree and Shooting

Memphis Police reported that Muirhead and the 13-year-old boy were involved in multiple crimes on July 2, including a deadly shooting at American Way and Lamar, near Memphis International Airport. The victim, a man, was found shot to death around 4:30 a.m. that morning.

Following a stolen vehicle, MPD investigators arrested Muirhead and the 13-year-old on July 4. The suspects were linked to various other crimes that occurred on the same day as the fatal shooting.

  • At around 4:30 a.m., officers responded to an auto theft on Woodlake Circle, where a 2018 Kia Sorento was reported stolen.
  • Shortly before 5:30 a.m., a robbery took place at an Exxon Gas Station on Winchester Road, where three armed suspects in all-black clothing stole items from victims and fled in a red Kia Sorento.
  • Another robbery occurred on Wind Meadow Lane just before midnight, involving two armed suspects who stole items and escaped in the same Sorento.

Legal Charges and Bond

Muirhead has been charged with first-degree murder in the perpetration of an aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery, and theft of property ranging from $10,000 to $60,000. He is currently held at the Shelby County Jail, with a bond set at $1,000,000 for the murder case and $200,000 for the robbery case. No bond is listed for a probation violation.

The 13-year-old boy has also been charged with first-degree murder in the perpetration of an aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery, and theft of property within the same value range.
