A Missouri man, Timothy Haslett, who was previously accused of keeping a woman hidden in his basement for about a month, has now been indicted for the murder of another woman, 36-year-old Jaynie Crosdale.

Details of the Case

Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Zachary Thompson announced on Tuesday that Timothy M. Haslett has been charged with murder in connection with Crosdale’s death. The prosecutor stated that Crosdale was killed by an act of homicidal violence, with her remains showing impact wounds consistent with a gunshot.

Haslett, a resident of Excelsior Springs, had previously been indicted on multiple charges including rape, sodomy, assault, kidnapping, and endangering the welfare of a child. He is currently being held in the Clay County Detention Center on a $5 million bond.

Survivor’s Harrowing Account

The case came to light in October 2022 when a woman managed to escape from Haslett’s locked basement after enduring weeks of torture. The survivor, who had been held captive by Haslett, described how he had raped, whipped, tortured, and choked her on a daily basis. She eventually escaped by slipping out of the chains when she believed Haslett was taking his child to school.

Furthermore, the survivor revealed to authorities that Haslett had confessed to killing two other women in the past. One victim was suffocated with a gas mask, while the other died after enduring violent sexual torture. Haslett had threatened the survivor that if she did not comply, he would suffocate her and dispose of her in a barrel like the others.

Progress in the Investigation

Law enforcement officers dedicated significant resources to the case, following over 100 leads and spending more than 1,200 hours on the investigation. A breakthrough came in June 2023 when kayakers discovered a blue, 30-gallon barrel containing human remains while camping off the Missouri River in Saline County. The remains were later identified as those of Jaynie Crosdale in July 2023.

Prosecutor Zachary Thompson emphasized that the charges filed against Haslett are based on the current evidence, indicating that the investigation is ongoing. He urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward.

Seeking Justice

Thompson expressed the importance of seeking justice for the victims, their families, and the community affected by these heinous crimes. He described the acts of violence committed by Haslett as brutal and barbaric, highlighting the need to hold the perpetrator accountable for his actions.
