Accident – Death – Obituary News : MINNEAPOLIS — A former employee of the Minnesota Timberwolves has been handed a two-year probation sentence for his involvement in the theft of a hard drive belonging to a team executive, according to court documents.

Somak Sarkar, who last month pleaded guilty to a gross misdemeanor charge of unauthorized computer access, was sentenced by a judge on Wednesday. The judge imposed a one-year jail sentence, which was stayed for two years, along with the probation. Sarkar may be eligible for early discharge after one year if he complies with the terms.

Surveillance footage implicated Sarkar in the incident, showing him entering the office of a Wolves executive vice president identified as S.G. on February 3, as per a criminal complaint. The EVP in question is Sachin Gupta, who holds the position of the team’s EVP of basketball operations.

Upon the EVP’s return to the office on February 5, it was discovered that his hard drive had been removed. Sarkar was terminated from his position by the Wolves after the footage came to light. In his defense, Sarkar claimed that he had taken the hard drive with the intention of storing some data on it but had forgotten to return it, as detailed in the complaint.

The hard drive, which was later retrieved from Sarkar by another employee, contained sensitive basketball-related information, the EVP’s social security number, tax details, and bank account information, as per investigators.

This incident has raised concerns about security protocols within the organization and highlighted the importance of safeguarding confidential information. The Wolves have yet to comment on the matter publicly.

The sentencing of Sarkar serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of unauthorized access to confidential data and the potential legal ramifications that can follow. It underscores the need for all employees to adhere to strict data protection policies and procedures to prevent breaches of trust and security lapses.

As the case draws to a close, the Minnesota Timberwolves are left to reflect on the lessons learned from this incident and the measures that must be taken to prevent similar breaches in the future.
