Scott Sims : “Grand Canyon Hiker Deaths Spike – Caution Advised”

A tragic incident unfolded in the Grand Canyon on Sunday, as a hiker lost his life on the Bright Angel Trail. This marks the third death at the national park in just one month, raising concerns about safety and preparedness for visitors.

The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a distress call about an unresponsive individual on the Bright Angel Trail around 2 p.m. Despite efforts from witnesses and first responders to administer CPR, the 50-year-old man, hailing from San Angelo, Texas, could not be revived.

This recent fatality follows two similar incidents in June. On June 29, Scott Sims, a 69-year-old from Austin, was discovered semi-conscious on the River Trail, while on June 16, a 41-year-old man was found unconscious on the Bright Angel Trail. Unfortunately, both individuals could not be resuscitated.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of death in all three cases, highlighting the ongoing investigations into these tragic events.

Warning on Extreme Temperatures

The National Park Service has issued a warning about the extreme temperatures in the Grand Canyon, with readings reaching up to 120 degrees even in shaded areas. Visitors are advised to avoid hiking in the inner canyon between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to reduce the risk of heat-related incidents.

Furthermore, emergency responders may face challenges during the summer months due to limited staff, a high volume of rescue calls, safety protocols for employees, and restricted helicopter operations in extreme heat or adverse weather conditions.
