BOISE, Idaho — Yellowstone National Park officials provided an update on the tragic incident that occurred on July 4, resulting in the death of one individual and injury to a ranger. The man involved in the shooting has been identified as Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, a 28-year-old from Milton, Florida.

Fussner, armed with a semi-automatic rifle, was reported to have threatened a mass shooting by a woman who alerted Yellowstone rangers. The woman, who was reportedly being held against her will by Fussner, expressed concerns about his intentions to carry out a violent attack.

The incident unfolded late on July 4 when dispatch received a distress call from the woman, indicating that she was in danger at a residence in Canyon Village where Fussner was present with a firearm.

According to park officials, the woman detailed Fussner’s plans to harm her and others, including a potential mass shooting at Independence Day events outside the park. Fussner’s vehicle was later discovered abandoned in the Canyon area, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

Over 20 rangers were deployed around Yellowstone in the early hours of the morning to ensure the safety of park visitors and locate Fussner. He was eventually found near Canyon Lodge, where he was seen firing his weapon towards the building’s service entrance.

A confrontation ensued between Fussner and law enforcement, resulting in gunfire exchanged between the parties. Tragically, Fussner succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while a ranger sustained a gunshot wound to the lower part of his body.

The injured ranger was promptly treated at the scene and later transported to the hospital for further medical attention. Fortunately, he is now in stable condition and has been discharged from the hospital.

Following standard protocol, the law enforcement rangers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, and their body camera footage will be made public after 30 days, as per National Park Service regulations.

It was revealed that Fussner was an employee of Xanterra Parks and Resorts, a business operating within Yellowstone National Park. The FBI and National Park Service are offering support to individuals affected by the tragic incident.
