The gunman who carried out a shooting in Yellowstone National Park last week, resulting in one ranger being injured, had reportedly held a woman against her will and had plans to carry out a mass shooting at July 4th events outside the park, authorities have revealed.

The shooter, identified as 28-year-old Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, died after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement, according to a recent news release by the US National Park Service. The injured park ranger was airlifted to a nearby regional hospital in stable condition and has since been discharged.

Details of the Shooting

The incident took place at Canyon Village, a collection of lodges and cabins located within the park, north of Yellowstone Lake and away from the main tourist areas. Yellowstone’s 911 dispatch center received a call just after midnight on July 4th reporting that a woman was being held against her will by an armed man in a residence at the village.

The woman informed law enforcement rangers that Fussner had threatened her and others, including plans to carry out mass shootings at July 4th events outside the park. Rangers located Fussner’s unoccupied vehicle in the Canyon area and determined that he was armed and dangerous.

Over 20 rangers were deployed to search for Fussner and protect visitors and employees within the park. In the early hours of the morning, rangers near the Canyon Lodge dining facility spotted Fussner walking towards the service entrance while firing a semi-automatic rifle. Several rangers engaged in gunfire with Fussner, resulting in his death at the scene.

Investigation and Support

Fussner, who was from Milton, Florida, was employed by Xanterra Parks and Resorts, a private business operating within Yellowstone. The FBI is leading the investigation into the incident, with support from the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming. Victim and witness support is being provided by the park service in collaboration with the FBI.

Law enforcement rangers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation, as per park service policy. Body-worn camera footage of the incident will be released within 30 days.

Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Cam Sholly commended the actions of the law enforcement rangers, stating that their quick response saved many lives during the incident. Efforts are underway to provide support to those affected by the shooting and their families.
