The individual who was fatally shot in Yellowstone National Park on Independence Day during a confrontation with law enforcement was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and had reportedly held a woman against her will, according to park officials.
Identified as Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, a 28-year-old resident of Milton, Florida, the deceased was an employee of Xanterra Parks and Resorts, a private company that manages lodging, cabins, and dining facilities in Canyon Village where the incident occurred.
Incident Details
On July 4th, just after midnight, Yellowstone’s emergency dispatch received a distress call reporting a woman being held captive by an armed man in a residence at Canyon Village. The victim claimed that Fussner had threatened to harm her and others, including plans for potential mass shootings at Fourth of July events outside the park, as per an official statement released by the park.
A “be on the lookout” (BOLO) alert was issued via Park County’s communication system around 2 A.M., describing the suspect as armed and dangerous, driving a 2021 Nissan Rogue with Florida license plates.

Although Fussner was last seen leaving Yellowstone, his intended destination was unclear. However, law enforcement speculated that he might have been en route to West Yellowstone or Cody.
Search and Confrontation
Authorities located Fussner’s vehicle abandoned in the Canyon area and initiated a search operation. Over 20 National Park Service (NPS) law enforcement rangers, including a special response team, were deployed to secure the area and protect visitors and staff.
At around 8 A.M., law enforcement rangers encountered Fussner near Canyon Lodge, where he reportedly approached the service entrance while firing a semi-automatic rifle. More than 200 individuals were present inside the building at the time.
Several rangers engaged Fussner in a gunfire exchange, resulting in his demise. One ranger sustained a gunshot wound to a lower extremity but is in stable condition after receiving medical treatment.
Investigation and Support
In accordance with National Park Service protocols, rangers involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave during the inquiry. The park has committed to releasing body-worn camera footage of the incident within 30 days.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is overseeing the investigation, with assistance from local authorities and the NPS. The findings will be reviewed by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming.
Collaborating with Xanterra and other partners, the FBI and NPS are offering victim and witness support to individuals impacted by the tragic event.
