Authorities in Bayelsa State have apprehended an 80-year-old man on charges of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl in Otuokpoti community, located in Ogbia Local Government Area. The suspect, known as Pa. Stephen, has been accused of being a repeat offender by local gender advocacy groups.
According to reports from the Dise Ogbise Foundation, Reigneth Foundation, Starrz Safety Initiative, and Collins Cocodia Foundation, Pa. Stephen, who is said to be suffering from advanced health issues, was identified as a serial paedophile by residents of the community. The suspect was taken into custody by the Bayelsa State Police Command and subsequently transferred to the state police headquarters in Yenagoa.
The foster mother of the victim raised concerns about the girl’s well-being after noticing changes in her behaviour and health. It was revealed that the abuse had been ongoing for approximately a year, with neighbours alerting the foster mother to suspicious interactions between the young girl and the elderly suspect.
Founder of the Dise Foundation, Dise Harry, commended the collaborative efforts of the gender advocacy groups in ensuring the arrest of the accused and providing support to the victim. Medical assistance and examinations were facilitated by the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Bayelsa State Chapter, with plans for psychological evaluation for the victim.

The victim has been placed in protective custody under the supervision of the Bayelsa State Government through the Ministry of Women Affairs. Harry expressed her concern over the incident, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from such atrocities.
While the Police Public Relations Officer, Musa Mohammed, has not officially commented on the case, the community remains vigilant in addressing issues of child protection and welfare.
