Police authorities in Bayelsa State have apprehended an 80-year-old man known as Pa. Stephen for allegedly sexually assaulting a 10-year-old pupil in Otuokpoti Community, located in the Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Confirming the arrest, Police spokesman ASP Musa Muhammed stated that the suspect, victim, and case file have been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation.
Gender Advocacy Groups Raise Alarm
Reports from various Gender Advocacy groups in the state such as the Dise Ogbise Foundation (Do Foundation), Reigneth Foundation, Starrz Safety Initiative, and the Collins Cocodia Foundation led to the arrest of the accused individual. Concerned citizens in the community alerted these groups to the suspicious activities of the alleged serial offender, who reportedly suffers from advanced pile and hernia.

Upon receiving the distressing information, the gender advocacy groups swiftly intervened in the situation at Otuokpoti community, ensuring that the perpetrator was brought to the attention of the Divisional Police Headquarters.
Long-Term Abuse Uncovered
Investigations revealed that the elderly man had been clandestinely abusing the child for over a year, unbeknownst to the girl’s foster mother. The foster mother, speaking anonymously to the press, noticed changes in the girl’s behavior and health, prompting concerns from neighbors who had observed suspicious interactions between the child and the accused.
Recounting the events, the foster mother stated, “Neighbours alerted me to the man’s inappropriate behavior towards my daughter, warning me to stay vigilant as he had a history of such actions. It was only when a community member witnessed the child entering the man’s residence after school that the abuse came to light.”
Collaborative Efforts for Justice
Dr. Dise Ogbise Goddy Harry, the Founder of the Dise Foundation, commended the collective efforts of the Gender Advocacy groups in ensuring the swift arrest and detention of the accused individual. The Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Bayelsa State Chapter, provided crucial medical support and examinations for the victim, who is now under the protective custody of the State government through the Ministry of Women Affairs.
Medical examinations have been conducted on the victim, with additional psychological assessments planned to support her recovery and well-being.
