A man accused of a deadly stabbing spree on a California beach town on July 4 has been charged with murder, authorities announced on Tuesday.
Logan Christopher Kelley, 26, faces charges of murder, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and battery on a police officer in connection with the incident that took place in Huntington Beach, southeast of Los Angeles. He is also charged under a provision known as “special circumstance of multiple murders,” which could result in the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole.
Deadly Attack on July 4
The attack occurred just after 11 p.m. when Kelley approached a group of people who were watching fireworks on the beach. Prosecutors revealed that Kelley had been drinking and had taken hallucinogenic drugs before he began stabbing people with a knife.
Tragically, two individuals, Eric Hodges, 42, and William Collins, 47, lost their lives in the attack. Two 35-year-old men and a 68-year-old man were also injured but are expected to recover from their injuries.

Brave Actions of Bystanders
Despite the chaos, several bystanders stepped in to detain Kelley until law enforcement arrived, including a courageous 16-year-old boy. During his arrest, Kelley allegedly assaulted the teenager, spat on a police officer, and used a racial slur.
Nationwide Violence on Independence Day
The incident in Huntington Beach was part of a wave of violence that swept across the United States on Independence Day, resulting in at least 33 fatalities, including 11 in Chicago. The Fourth of July has historically been a day marred by violence in the country.
“What was supposed to be a day of celebrating American freedom turned into a tragic event at the hands of a stranger,” remarked Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer.
