In a move to reduce waste and promote sustainability, hotels in New York will no longer be providing mini bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion starting in 2025. This decision comes as part of a law signed by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul in 2021, which aims to tackle the environmental impact of plastic waste.

The ban applies to hotels and motels with more than 50 rooms, prohibiting the use of small plastic containers for these personal care products. Specifically, the law defines small bottles as any container holding less than 12 ounces.

Originally scheduled to take effect in 2023, the implementation of the restrictions was postponed to allow hotel owners to deplete their existing stock of mini bottles. However, come January 1, 2025, hotels with over 50 rooms will be required to comply with the new regulations.

For smaller establishments with fewer than 50 rooms, the deadline for transitioning away from mini bottles is set for 2026. This phased approach is intended to give businesses additional time to adjust their practices and find alternative solutions.

Interestingly, many hotels both within and outside of New York have already embraced eco-friendly alternatives by installing dispensers for shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion. This proactive shift towards more sustainable practices not only aligns with the upcoming legislation but also reflects a broader industry trend towards environmental responsibility.
