Accident – Death – Obituary News : Lawyers representing Karen Read have revealed that a fourth juror has stepped forward to affirm that the jury unanimously agreed to acquit her of second-degree murder and a lesser charge at her recent trial. The trial ultimately ended in a mistrial on July 1 due to a deadlock among the jurors.

According to Alan Jackson, one of Read’s attorneys, the fourth juror, identified as Juror D, contacted him directly to assert that the jury had reached a unanimous decision in favor of Read’s innocence on the charges of second-degree murder and leaving the scene of personal injury and death. This statement aligns with the testimony of three other jurors who have previously come forward.

In response to these developments, Read’s legal team filed a motion on Monday seeking the dismissal of the two charges mentioned above. One juror quoted in the motion stated that the murder charge against Read was “off the table.”

The recent affidavit submitted by Jackson confirms that Juror D, like the other jurors, indicated that the jury was only divided on a charge of manslaughter while driving under the influence. The juror explicitly stated that they found Read not guilty of the murder and leaving the scene charges.

In light of these revelations, Martin G. Weinberg, another lawyer representing Read, emphasized that the unanimous decision by the jury should prevent any retrial of the case on the aforementioned charges, citing Double Jeopardy protections.

Judge Beverly J. Cannone declared a mistrial in Read’s case on July 1 after the jury failed to reach a verdict following several days of deliberation. The Norfolk District Attorney’s office has expressed its intention to retry the case, with a status conference scheduled for July 22.

The case against Read stems from an incident in which she allegedly backed her Lexus SUV into her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, after a night of heavy drinking. Read’s attorneys have argued that O’Keefe was actually fatally beaten inside a home before his body was placed outside.

As the legal proceedings continue, it remains to be seen how the new developments will impact the future of Karen Read’s case. The defense team’s assertion of unanimous jury agreement on her innocence adds a significant layer of complexity to the ongoing legal battle.
