Following the brutal murder of Likens, Governor Shapiro took to social media platform “X” to express his stance on the matter, advocating for the full prosecution of the perpetrator.

In a heartfelt tweet, Shapiro asserted, “It’s high time we enhance Pennsylvania’s legislation to treat hate-driven crimes against LGBTQ+ individuals with the same severity as other hate crimes. Place the bill on my desk, and I will endorse it.”

Amidst mounting pressure from transgender advocacy groups, who are calling for Likens’ murder to be investigated as a possible hate crime, the Governor’s resolute response signifies a pivotal moment in the fight for justice.

Tragically, Likens, a transgender girl, was allegedly slain by 29-year-old DaShawn Watkins after connecting with him online, shedding light on the vulnerability faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

Under the Federal Hate Crimes Prevention Act, marginalized groups, including those based on gender identity, are afforded protection, yet the harrowing incident has exposed the urgent need for further legislative action.

Advocates, such as the Pennsylvania Youth Congress, are urging authorities to delve deeper into the case and contemplate pursuing hate crime charges against Watkins, underscoring the demand for accountability and justice.

In a show of solidarity and remembrance, the Shenango Valley Pride Picnic is orchestrating a poignant vigil for Pauly at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the LGBTQ-I-A Plus Alliance on Stambaugh Avenue, inviting the community to honour her memory and stand against hate.
