Accident – Death – Obituary News : It has been one year since Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy John Durm tragically lost his life at the jail in Indianapolis. The community continues to honour his memory, with a new sign marking the Deputy John Durm Memorial Mile along I-74 near the Acton Road exit.

The memorial sign was unveiled at Buck Creek Winery, where Durm’s family and friends gathered to pay tribute to his service and sacrifice. The Indiana General Assembly voted to create memorial miles for Durm and Indianapolis Police Department Officer Breann Leath in the 2024 legislative session, highlighting the lasting impact of their service.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office released a statement expressing their continued support for Deputy Durm’s family and their commitment to never forget his dedication to the community. The agency unveiled Deputy Durm’s official memorial portrait and permanently retired his badge number, 333, as a tribute to his legacy.

A memorial service was held by the sheriff’s office, where Sheriff Kerry Forestal unveiled the fallen deputy portrait for Durm and issued a special order to retire his badge number. The MCSO honor guard will place Durm’s portrait alongside other fallen deputies in a solemn ceremony on July 12.

Deputy Durm’s death on July 10, 2023, was a tragic loss for Marion County. The Marion County Coroner’s Office ruled his death a homicide, citing ligature strangulation as the cause. Deputy Durm was returning from Eskenazi Hospital with an inmate when he was attacked outside the Criminal Justice Center by the inmate, Orlando Mitchell.

Mitchell allegedly took control of the van and crashed it outside the complex, leading to Durm’s untimely death. Mitchell has been charged with Durm’s murder and is awaiting trial, as officials continue to investigate the incident as intentional homicide.

In the aftermath of Deputy Durm’s death, numerous officials issued statements honouring his memory and expressing condolences to his family. Governor Eric Holcomb, Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, and Indianapolis City-County Council minority leader Brian Mowery all paid tribute to Deputy Durm’s service and sacrifice.

The history of Marion County sheriff’s deputy deaths serves as a sombre reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face every day. Deputy Durm’s death marked the first loss for the MCSO since 2002, when Deputy Kay Gregory died in a crash, and in 2001 when Deputy Jason Baker was killed in the line of duty.
