Accident – Death – Obituary News : An 84-year-old driver, James Axelson, from Toutle, was involved in a tragic accident last month in Longview that resulted in the death of a young mother, Emily Cox, and injuries to another woman. Axelson, who claims to have passed out while driving to a senior center for lunch, has not been charged with a crime as officials believe he experienced a medical event.

Cowlitz County Prosecuting Attorney Ryan Jurvakainen stated that the Longview Police Department has not referred the case to his office, and it has been reported that Axelson suffered a medical event while behind the wheel. Detectives have recommended that the Washington Department of Licensing re-examine Axelson’s driver’s license in light of the incident.
The accident, which occurred on June 13, claimed the life of Emily Cox, a 20-year-old from Longview, leaving behind her 7-month-old daughter. Marissa Armstrong, a spokesperson for Clark County Public Health, confirmed that Cox’s death was ruled an accident caused by blunt force injuries sustained when she was struck by Axelson’s minivan.
Following the crash, Axelson spent a couple of days in the hospital for treatment. The intersection of Florida Street and Seventh Avenue, where the tragic incident took place, still bears marks of the collision days later. Large pieces of plywood cover the hole where Axelson’s minivan crashed into an apartment building.
The Longview Fire Department responded to the scene after reports of a vehicle striking Cox and crashing into the residence. Cox was found unconscious on the lawn, while the other victim was trapped between the van and an inside wall of the apartment. Firefighters had to cut through the wall to free the injured victim, who was airlifted to a medical center in Vancouver.

The community rallied together in the wake of Emily Cox’s passing, organizing fundraisers to support her family. Nina Pogue, owner of Rainier’s Hometown Pizza, led a successful fundraising event that raised nearly $5,000 for the Cox family. In total, the community raised over $10,000 through various events and donations.
