A man in Washington, D.C., was found dead in his apartment in April, in what authorities believe was a violent and gruesome murder. The victim, identified as Fasil Teklemariam, 53, had his thumb cut off in order to access his mobile payment app and steal money from him, according to investigators.

The body of Fasil Teklemariam was discovered in his apartment bedroom on April 5, with signs of a violent struggle and multiple injuries. Investigators suspect foul play and have identified 19-year-old Audrey Denise Miller as the prime suspect in the case. Teklemariam had sustained several cuts to his legs, a cut on his right hand, and his right thumb had been forcibly removed.

According to witness statements, Miller and another woman, identified as Tiffany Taylor Gray, 22, were allegedly involved in the gruesome act of cutting off the man’s thumb. The victim also had fractures on his head, stab wounds in his stomach, and was surrounded by broken glass at the crime scene. Investigators estimate that he was killed between two to five days before his body was discovered.

The cause of Teklemariam’s death was determined to be a result of “multiple blunt force” and “sharp force injuries,” leading to the filing of first-degree murder charges against Audrey Denise Miller. The crime scene also showed signs of cleaning products being used, indicating an attempt to cover up the evidence of the violent crime.

Surveillance footage from the building where Teklemariam resided captured Miller, Gray, and two unidentified men entering and exiting the premises over several days. They allegedly used the victim’s key fob to gain access to his apartment, where they stole various items including electronics and watches. Further investigation revealed that the suspects used Teklemariam’s thumb to access his mobile payment app and withdraw funds.

Miller was arrested on June 21 and charged with first-degree murder and armed felony murder, while Gray was apprehended in Prince George’s County on July 1 on similar charges. The case continues to unfold, with further individuals possibly linked to Teklemariam’s tragic demise.
