The El Paso County Coroner’s office has officially identified the two individuals who tragically lost their lives in a fatal crash that occurred at the intersection of Powers Boulevard and Fountain Boulevard in Colorado Springs on the morning of June 16, 2024. The victims have been named as 51-year-old Emily Hoffman and 72-year-old Olga Guavala.

Details of the Incident

Colorado Springs Police responded to reports of a three-car collision at the intersection of South Powers Boulevard and East Fountain Boulevard just before noon on June 16. The investigation conducted by CSPD revealed that the first vehicle, travelling southbound on Powers Boulevard, ran a red light and collided with a second car. The impact of the crash caused the second vehicle to hit a third car, resulting in the third car rolling onto its side. Tragically, the driver of the second car, Olga Guavala, and the passenger in the third car, Emily Hoffman, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the first car sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Legal Consequences

Following the investigation, Colorado Springs Police have identified the driver of the first car as 40-year-old Shawn Johnston. Johnston has been arrested on charges of two counts of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and several other traffic-related offences.

According to CSPD, the fatalities of Emily Hoffman and Olga Guavala mark the 28th and 29th traffic-related deaths in Colorado Springs this year. Comparatively, at the same period last year, there were 22 fatalities recorded in the city. Over the past 365 days, Colorado Springs has seen a total of 57 traffic fatalities.
