A human skull discovered by local children in Clear Creek County in 2018 has been identified using advanced genealogy techniques, the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office announced.

The skull was found on May 11, 2018, near a power pole with a tooth fragment nearby. Apart from a missing mandible, the skull was largely undamaged.

After a thorough examination by a forensic anthropologist in May 2023, it was determined that there was no evidence of trauma on the skull. The individual had been deceased for at least four months, but likely for a year or more.

The skull was then sent to the University of North Texas for DNA extraction in an effort to make an identification. The DNA extracted was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

In 2023, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation utilized advanced genealogy techniques to find a DNA match for the skull. Through this process, they were able to identify the individual as David “Michael” Crady, born in October 1955.

Crady’s family had lost contact with him several years prior to the discovery of the skull. A family member provided a DNA sample, and in early May of this year, CBI confirmed the identity of Crady with a 99.9% accuracy match.

Sheriff Matthew Harris expressed gratitude to the University of North Texas, CBI, and forensic experts for their collaboration in the identification process. He hopes that this identification will bring closure to Mr. Crady’s family.

The investigation into Crady’s death remains open, with no leads on how he died or how his skull ended up in Clear Creek County. Anyone with information on this case is urged to contact the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office at 303-679-2393.
