HUDSPETH COUNTY, Texas (KVIA) — The community of Hudspeth County, Texas, is reeling from a devastating tragedy that claimed the lives of a mother, her two daughters, and two nephews in a fatal car crash. The mother, identified as Cristina Martinez, along with her two daughters and two nephews, were involved in a horrific accident while returning from Houston, where one of Cristina’s daughters was receiving treatment for cancer.
ABC-7 Anchor Paul Cicala spoke with grieving loved ones of Cristina Martinez, who shared that the family was returning from Houston after completing the medical treatment for cancer when the accident occurred.
The victims of the crash have been identified as 28-year-old El Pasoan Abigail Martinez, a 10-year-old boy, a 9-year-old girl, a 3-year-old girl, and a 6-year-old boy. The Texas Department of Public Safety has not released the identities of the minors involved in the tragic incident.
Tragically, the two girls who lost their lives in the crash were Cristina Martinez’s daughters, while the two boys who also perished were Abigail Martinez’s sons.
Cristina Martinez and her surviving daughter were stranded in Houston due to Hurricane Beryl, with the daughter having just completed her medical treatment for cancer. The family’s ordeal was compounded by the devastating loss they experienced on their journey back home.

Details of the Accident
According to preliminary investigations by the Texas Department of Public Safety, the tragic accident occurred when Abigail’s vehicle was travelling westbound on I-10 near mile marker 101. The vehicle veered off the roadway, entered the centre median, and then overcorrected, resulting in the loss of control. The vehicle ultimately came to a stop on the north frontage road of I-10.
The authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident to determine the exact cause of the fatal crash.
