Law enforcement in Baker County and Baker City were kept busy recently with a string of bizarre events involving a woman from California who caused quite a stir on Interstate 84 and later in Baker.
On July 5, at around 12:00pm, 35-year-old Courtney Lyn Battaglieri, hailing from Eureka, California, was spotted attempting to hitchhike near milepost 340 near Huntington. Witnesses reported a woman yelling and running onto the freeway, disrupting eastbound traffic. Battaglieri’s behaviour quickly escalated as she allegedly tried to strike a motorist with a 2×4 and later threw a rock at another vehicle.
Oregon State Police located Battaglieri near milepost 344 and she was apprehended without further incident. She was then taken to the Baker County Jail where she was booked on a charge of second-degree disorderly conduct before being released in accordance with jail policy.
However, Battaglieri’s day was far from over. Around 7:30pm, Baker City Police responded to a call at the Sunridge Inn reporting a woman causing damage by throwing a rock through a window. The suspect was identified as Battaglieri.
Upon arrival at the scene, Baker City officers found Battaglieri walking towards the swimming pool despite commands to stop. Witnesses also reported that she had thrown a rock at a 2024 Subaru Outback, resulting in a cracked windshield and approximately $1,025 in damage. The motel window sustained an additional $700 in damage.
Battaglieri was arrested for a second time that day and remained in custody at the Baker County Jail as of Tuesday, July 9. She now faces multiple charges, including first, second, and third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal trespassing, and third-degree escape for failing to comply with police commands.
