A 14-year-old boy visiting Florida from Missouri was bitten by a shark on Wednesday morning while enjoying the waters off Daytona Beach Shores, according to Volusia County Beach Safety officials.

The incident occurred around noon as the teenager was standing in knee-deep water near the 3300 block of State Road A1A (S. Atlantic Avenue). The boy sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his left foot and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, as stated in a press release.

This marks the fourth shark attack reported in Volusia County this month alone. Just a few days prior, a 14-year-old boy from Flagler County was bitten by a shark near Ponce Inlet, while a 26-year-old man from Sarasota fell victim to a shark attack off New Smyrna Beach. Additionally, a 21-year-old man from Ohio was attacked by a shark along the same stretch of New Smyrna Beach, according to Volusia County Beach Safety.

Connor Baker, the Ohio man who was bitten by the shark, recounted the harrowing experience, revealing that he suffered four torn tendons in his foot during the attack. “All of a sudden it felt like my foot was getting stabbed on both sides, my first instinct was to yank my foot out, I was (kind of) in shock,” Baker recounted.

Shark Safety Tips

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offers the following tips to reduce the risk of shark attacks:

  • Always stay in groups as sharks are more likely to target individuals who are alone.
  • Avoid straying too far from shore, as it isolates individuals from assistance.
  • Avoid swimming in the water during darkness.
  • Avoid entering the water if bleeding from an open wound or menstruating.
  • Avoid wearing shiny jewelry in the water.
  • Avoid waters with known discharges or sewage and areas used for fishing.
  • Exercise extra caution in murky waters.
  • Avoid excess splashing as it may attract sharks.
  • Do not allow pets in the water, as their movements can attract sharks.
  • Swim only in areas where lifeguards are present.
  • Do not enter the water if sharks are known to be present and exit the water if sharks are spotted.

Following these guidelines can help beachgoers stay safe and reduce the likelihood of shark encounters while enjoying the beautiful waters of Florida.
