An investigation is currently underway to identify the victims and ascertain the exact cause of the tragic accident, as stated by Kumar. Gaurang Rathi, a government official, revealed that initial findings suggest the bus may have been speeding when it rear-ended the milk truck, causing both vehicles to overturn. The impact was so severe that one side of the bus was torn off, leading to passengers being thrown from the vehicle. Images broadcasted on television depicted bodies strewn across the road.
Road safety concerns in India
India grapples with some of the highest road fatality rates globally, with hundreds of thousands of individuals succumbing to road accidents each year. The primary causes are often attributed to reckless driving, poorly maintained road infrastructure, and ageing vehicles.
This tragic incident comes on the heels of a similar bus accident in May, where a vehicle carrying Hindu pilgrims plunged into a deep gorge on a mountainous highway in Indian-controlled Kashmir, resulting in the loss of at least 21 lives.
