A person discovered in the Pacific Ocean just south of the city of Fort Bragg in April has been positively identified as a missing local woman, thanks to the use of DNA analysis, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

The body of the woman was spotted in the water by two individuals visiting the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens on the afternoon of April 26. At the time, MCSO spokesman Capt. Quincy Cromer stated that no identifying marks or characteristics were found to determine the identity of the deceased. Based on the clothing found on the body, it was believed to be that of an adult female, with no other identifying information discovered during the initial investigation.

In a recent press release, the MCSO confirmed that the woman has been identified as Angela Geovanna Carrillo-Palomar, aged 29 and a resident of Fort Bragg. Her identity was established through a DNA sample collected during her autopsy.

According to the press release, the decedent matched the general physical characteristics of a known missing person reported to the Fort Bragg Police Department on April 14. Sheriff’s Office personnel obtained familial DNA samples from the missing person’s family, which were then sent to the Department of Justice DNA Lab in Richmond, Calif., for comparison. On July 3, the MCSO was notified that the DNA sample from the investigation was a familial match to the missing person reported to the FBPD.

The MCSO is urging anyone with information related to the coroner’s investigation to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center at 707-463-4086.
