UPDATE 7/10/2024 @ 12:30 P.M.: Authorities in Calvert County, Maryland, were called to the scene at 6790 Hallowing Lane near the Benedict Bridge in Prince Frederick on Monday, July 8, 2024, after receiving a 911 hang-up call. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that the call was related to a potential missing person.
An investigation revealed that Alex Garcia-Lopez, a 19-year-old resident of Huntingtown, was swimming in the Patuxent River when he went underwater and did not resurface. Despite extensive search efforts by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, and various local volunteer fire departments and agencies, Garcia-Lopez’s body was not located until shortly after 6 a.m. on July 10, 2024.
The authorities notified Garcia-Lopez’s next of kin and transported his body to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for further examination.
Identification of Missing Person
UPDATE 7/9/2024: The missing individual from the Benedict Bridge incident has been identified as Alex Garcia-Lopez. Described as a Hispanic male aged 19, Garcia-Lopez was last seen wearing black swimming trunks and no shirt. Authorities urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office at 410-535-2800.
The incident took place on the evening of July 8, 2024, when emergency services were alerted to a possible drowning at the Benedict Bridge Boat Ramp in Prince Frederick. Callers reported that their intoxicated friend had entered the water and could not be located.
Law enforcement and emergency personnel from Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s County, in addition to agencies such as the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Maryland State Police, were involved in the search operation. Helicopters, drones, dive teams, and boats were deployed to scour the area for the missing individual.
