MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A woman was taken into custody on Monday night after she commandeered a Memphis Fire Department (MFD) ambulance and subsequently crashed it in the Medical District, according to authorities.

Tanya Thomas, 50, was apprehended by Memphis Police (MPD) following the incident, during which she reportedly ran over a nurse’s foot, collided with a brick wall, and attempted to strike officers after seizing the emergency vehicle from Regional One Health. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m.

MPD revealed that an officer, who was present at the trauma center for a DOA call, was alerted by nurses about the theft of the MFD vehicle a few minutes prior.

The woman, later identified as Thomas, then entered a 2019 Ford F5G owned by MFD and purportedly tried to ram into two officers who were present at the scene. A pursuit ensued, culminating in the stolen vehicle coming to a stop a few blocks away at the V.A. Medical Center, as per police reports.

Thomas was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated assault, evading arrest, and theft of property exceeding $250,000.

Crittenden County EMS, in a Facebook post, expressed disbelief at the sequence of events, stating, “Can’t make this stuff up.”

Furthermore, Crittenden County EMS detailed how one of its emergency vehicles sustained damage after a patient exited the trauma center and accessed the MFD ambulance truck, setting off a chain of chaotic events.

The woman behind the wheel of the MFD ambulance veered into a concrete wall, swerved to avoid an armed security guard, and ultimately collided with the Crittenden County EMS vehicle, officials disclosed.

The Crittenden County ambulance was rendered “inoperable” as a result of the incident, officials confirmed.

In a separate incident in August 2023, Memphis Police reported a man who had absconded with a Crittenden County ambulance, subsequently striking a pedestrian and triggering a multi-vehicle collision in East Memphis.
