Another Tragic Incident at Grand Canyon National Park

A 50-year-old man from San Angelo, Texas, lost his life while hiking at the Grand Canyon National Park. The National Park Service reported that the man was found unresponsive on the Bright Angel Trail, situated about 100 feet below the Bright Angel Trailhead.

Upon discovery, bystanders immediately initiated CPR while Xanterra Fire and Security, along with National Park Service medical personnel, rushed to the scene. Despite their best efforts, the man could not be resuscitated.

The unfortunate incident occurred as the man was attempting to ascend to the rim following an overnight stay at Havasupai Gardens. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are currently underway by the NPS and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

This tragic event comes just a month after another hiker, 69-year-old Scott Sims from Austin, perished while hiking at the national park. Sims was striving to reach Phantom Ranch for an overnight stay when he was found semiconscious on the River Trail, located halfway between the Silver Bridge and Black Bridge near Phantom Ranch. Unfortunately, Sims could not be revived.

Park officials have issued warnings about the extreme temperatures in the inner canyon during the summer months, with exposed parts of the trail reaching over 120 degrees. Visitors are advised against hiking between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to avoid heat-related incidents.

A recent news release from the NPS emphasised the potential delays in rescue efforts during the summer due to limited staff, high volume of rescue calls, employee safety protocols, and restricted helicopter operations in extreme heat or adverse weather conditions.
