YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — New details have emerged following the death of a shooting suspect in a gunfight with Yellowstone park rangers on the fourth of July.

The incident unfolded shortly after midnight on Thursday, as per a statement from park authorities. Yellowstone dispatch received a distress call reporting that a woman was being held captive by an armed man in a residence at Canyon Village.

The woman informed officers that the man, later identified as 28-year-old Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, had threatened her life and divulged plans to carry out mass shootings at Independence Day events outside the park.

Upon locating Fussner’s unoccupied vehicle in the Canyon area, park rangers strategically positioned themselves to safeguard park visitors and staff while conducting a search for the suspect. Additionally, law enforcement in neighbouring areas was alerted to the situation.

As morning broke, over 20 NPS law enforcement rangers, including the park’s special response team, were mobilised to ensure the safety of park-goers and track down Fussner.

At around 8 a.m., rangers spotted Fussner near Canyon Lodge, where both employees and the public dine. Fussner proceeded towards the service entrance of the building, firing a semi-automatic rifle, with approximately 200 individuals inside at the time.

Multiple rangers engaged Fussner, resulting in his demise amidst the exchange of gunfire. One ranger sustained a gunshot wound and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital in a stable condition. Subsequently, they were discharged from medical care.

There were no other reported injuries stemming from the altercation.

Fussner was an employee of Xanterra Parks and Resorts, a private entity authorised to operate within Yellowstone, according to the official statement.

The FBI, with assistance from the National Park Service, Xanterra, and other collaborators, is extending victim and witness support to all individuals involved in the incident.

Per its protocol, law enforcement officials with the NPS who were implicated in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation.

The NPS has committed to releasing available body-cam footage within 30 days.

“Thanks to the courageous actions of our law enforcement rangers, numerous lives were safeguarded here last Thursday,” remarked Superintendent Cam Sholly in the official statement. “These rangers promptly confronted the gunman and took resolute measures to mitigate the threat to public safety. We are currently focused on delivering comprehensive assistance to those impacted and their families. We are grateful for the cooperation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Park Service, Department of the Interior, and various other allies as we navigate through the aftermath of this incident.”
