The tragic incident that occurred at Yellowstone National Park last Thursday has shocked the nation. Park officials have revealed that a man, identified as Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, was shot and killed by rangers after he approached a building occupied by approximately 200 people while firing a semi-automatic rifle. The 28-year-old from Milton, Florida, tragically lost his life at the scene, while one ranger sustained a gunshot wound in a lower extremity but has since been treated and released from the hospital.

Heroic Actions of Law Enforcement Rangers

Superintendent Cam Sholly commended the heroic actions of the law enforcement rangers, stating, “Thanks to the heroic actions of our law enforcement rangers, many lives were saved here last Thursday. These rangers immediately confronted this shooter and took decisive action to ensure he was no longer a threat to public safety.”

It was revealed that Fussner was an employee of Xanterra Parks and Resorts, a private business contracted by the National Park Service to provide lodging and other services at Yellowstone.

Sequence of Events

The sequence of events leading up to the fatal confrontation began shortly after midnight on Thursday when 911 dispatchers received a distressing call. A woman reported being held against her will by a man with a gun at a residence in Canyon Village, near the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. She disclosed that Fussner had threatened to harm her and others and had planned a mass shooting at Fourth of July events outside the park.

Rangers discovered Fussner’s unoccupied vehicle in the Canyon area, prompting authorities to strategically deploy law enforcement rangers to safeguard park visitors and employees. The park mobilized more than 20 rangers, including the special response team, to search for Fussner while ensuring public safety.

Confrontation and Tragic Outcome

At around 8 a.m. on Thursday, rangers encountered Fussner near Canyon Lodge, where he was walking towards the service entrance while firing his rifle. A gunfight ensued between Fussner and the rangers, resulting in injuries to both parties. Emergency medical care was promptly provided to Fussner and the wounded ranger, but tragically, Fussner succumbed to his injuries.

The FBI has taken over the investigation into the incident and is offering support to those affected. Superintendent Sholly expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of various agencies in managing the aftermath of the tragic event.

Ongoing Investigation and Support

Rangers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave as per standard protocol during the investigation. The National Park Service has committed to releasing body-camera footage of the incident within 30 days to provide transparency and clarity.
