Authorities have named the individual who was fatally shot in a gunfire exchange at Yellowstone National Park last week, as confirmed by the local sheriff’s office.

The incident, which resulted in one park ranger sustaining injuries, took place overnight on Wednesday and into the morning of the Fourth of July, according to a news release from the park service. The injured ranger is said to be in stable condition following the altercation, as reported by the National Park Service (NPS).

Reports were received by park rangers regarding an armed individual, now identified as 28-year-old Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, who was making threats in the popular Canyon Village area of the park. Rangers engaged with the individual, leading to an exchange of gunfire, as stated by the NPS.

Fussner, a resident of Milton, Florida, was declared deceased after an “armed altercation with at least one Park Ranger,” as per a post made by the Park County Sheriff’s Office on Monday.

According to the Park County coroner Cody Gortmaker, Fussner’s cause of death was determined to be gunshot wounds. Local reports have indicated that Fussner was a contractor working at Yellowstone through the Xanterra Travel Collection. His Facebook profile picture displayed his employee ID, suggesting that his contract was due to expire in September.

Xanterra Travel Collection has yet to respond to requests for confirmation regarding Fussner’s employment status.

The investigation into the Yellowstone National Park incident involves the NPS, FBI, and local authorities. While the NPS refrained from providing additional details, both the FBI and local police have not responded to requests for comments.
