Authorities Confirm Identification of Remains of Missing Transgender Teen in Pennsylvania
Authorities in the state of Pennsylvania have officially identified the remains of 14-year-old Pauly Likens Jr. The tragic discovery was made on June 25 in Shenango River Lake, a reservoir located in western Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio. The investigation revealed that the remains had been dismembered.

Details of the Case
According to reports by NBC News, Pauly Likens Jr. was last seen on June 23 at a public park in her hometown of Sharon, Pennsylvania, which is approximately 25 miles east of Youngstown, Ohio. She was reported missing two days later, on the same day that unidentified remains were found in close proximity. The Mercer County Coroner’s Office determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
Prior to her disappearance, Likens had been at a friend’s house and left to return home between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. She was in contact with her friend via Snapchat around 2:30 a.m.
Arrest and Charges
Police arrested 29-year-old DaShawn Watkins in connection with Likens’ death. Watkins is facing charges that include first-degree murder, aggravated assault, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence. Evidence such as cell phone data and security footage linked Watkins to Likens and the crime scene. Surveillance videos showed Likens waiting near Budd Street Public Park, close to where her body was later discovered, between 3 and 3:40 p.m.
Additional security footage captured Watkins’ vehicle leaving the area near the park at the time when Likens’ phone went unanswered. Footage from Watkins’ apartment complex on June 23 and the following day showed him handling a large rifle and trash bags. Watkins is set to appear for a preliminary hearing on July 25.
Community Response
The Shenango Valley LBGTQIA+ Alliance Leader, Pamela Ladner, revealed that Likens’ family members have confirmed that the teenager identified as a transgender girl. Ladner expressed that Likens’ mother is in disbelief over the tragic events and has called for authorities to charge Watkins with a hate crime.
A vigil in memory of Pauly Likens Jr. is scheduled to take place on Saturday, honouring her life and the impact she had on the community.
