Authorities in Pennsylvania have officially confirmed the identity of the remains discovered in Shenango River Lake as belonging to 14-year-old Pauly Likens Jr. The dismembered remains were found on June 25 in the reservoir located in western Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio.
Details of Likens’ Disappearance
Pauly Likens Jr was last seen on June 23 at a public park in her hometown of Sharon, Pennsylvania, just 15 miles east of Youngtown, Ohio. She was reported missing two days later, on the same day that the unidentified remains were discovered nearby. The Mercer County Coroner’s Office determined that the cause of Likens’ death was sharp force trauma to the head. Prior to her disappearance, Likens had been at a friend’s house and left to walk home between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. She had last communicated with her friend via Snapchat around 2:30 a.m.
Suspect Arrested in Connection with Likens’ Death
Last week, police arrested 29-year-old DaShawn Watkins in connection with Likens’ death. Watkins is facing charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence. Investigators were able to connect Watkins to Likens and the crime scene through cellphone data and security video footage. Surveillance footage showed Likens waiting near Budd Street Public Park, close to the reservoir where her body was eventually found, between 3 and 3:40 p.m.
Additional Evidence Against Watkins
Further evidence against Watkins includes security footage from his apartment complex on June 23 and the following day, which showed him struggling with a large duffel bag and garbage bags. Watkins is set to have a preliminary hearing on July 25, while a vigil for Likens is planned for Saturday.

Community Response and Calls for Justice
Pamela Ladner, leader of the Shenango Valley LBGTQIA+ Alliance, confirmed that Likens’ family members have stated that the teen identified as a transgender girl. Ladner expressed that Likens’ mother is in disbelief and has called for authorities to charge Watkins with a hate crime in addition to the existing charges.
