A momentous occasion took place at the Regional General Hospital in Indramayu, West Java, on July 7, as a woman gave birth to quintuplets, making it the first recorded quintuplet birth in the district. Dr. Deden Bonni Koswara, the hospital’s director, confirmed this extraordinary event, highlighting the rarity of such births.

The birth of quintuplets is an incredibly rare occurrence, with the odds of conceiving quintuplets standing at 1 in 55 million births. Dr. Koswara shared that during the woman’s previous pregnancy check-ups, doctors had only detected three babies. However, during a later check-up in the 28th week of pregnancy, another baby was discovered.

“Even as we approached the birth date, we were only aware of four fetuses. The fifth one was not detected during the ultrasound test due to their positioning,” Dr. Koswara explained.

The 32-year-old mother, identified as Nuraeni, was referred to the Indramayu Regional Hospital by her local health center for the delivery of her quintuplets. The babies, comprising four girls and one boy, were safely delivered through a cesarean birth on Sunday. Due to their below-average weight at birth, they have been placed in intensive care.

“All five babies were born healthy, and currently, the mother and her infants are recuperating in separate wards,” Dr. Koswara reassured. Furthermore, he mentioned that the expenses for Nuraeni’s treatment and the newborns will be covered by BPJS Kesehatan, the state health insurer.
