Accident – Death – Obituary News : A 14-year-old boy was bitten by a shark while participating in a lifeguard training camp in Volusia County, Florida, on Monday morning. The incident occurred near the Ponce Inlet lifeguard tower around noon, as the teen was practicing water entries. The shark, identified as a 4- to 5-foot-long blacktip, bit the boy on the leg.

Fortunately, the teen’s injuries were not life-threatening, and he was taken by his parents to receive stitches. This shark attack comes after two separate incidents in nearby New Smyrna Beach, where a 26-year-old man was bitten on the foot while floating in an inner tube on Friday, and a 21-year-old man was bitten while playing football in shallow water on Thursday.
Authorities in the area have issued warnings to residents about increased shark activity, which is common in Florida between April and October. Despite these warnings, shark attacks are rare globally, with less than 70 unprovoked incidents reported last year, according to the International Shark Attack File. Out of these incidents, ten were fatal. Nearly half of all shark attacks in the US occur in Florida, with Volusia County earning the nickname “Shark Bite Capital of the World.”
