Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The city of Dayton is gearing up for its annual fall tree planting program, offering residents the opportunity to request free street trees for planting in the right-of-way along their street. Applications are currently being accepted from interested individuals through the city’s official website.

In the previous year, the city successfully planted approximately 116 trees as part of the program. This marked a significant increase from the 35 trees planted in 2022 and the 100 trees planted in 2021, according to data provided by city officials. On average, the cost of planting a single tree is estimated to be around $425.

City spokesperson, Maloney, stated, “We are strategically focusing on planting trees in areas where there are gaps in our existing tree canopy, as well as addressing resident requests for specific locations.”

Additionally, Dayton has recently been granted $2 million from the Forest Service to conduct an urban tree inventory and tree canopy assessment. The city commission is set to approve the resolution accepting the grant later this week.

Maloney further explained that the grant will also facilitate the development of an urban forestry master plan, with the allocated funding being utilized to implement the plan’s recommendations effectively.

Over the years, Dayton’s tree canopy has experienced a decline, although the exact extent remains unknown as the city has not conducted a comprehensive tree inventory since the late 1980s. Maloney expressed confidence that the funding will enable the city to prioritize tree maintenance and planting efforts based on the assessment results.

The tree inventory and assessment process is anticipated to span 12 to 16 months, while the development of the urban forestry master plan is projected to take approximately a year. Implementation of the plan is expected to occur over several years.

In a similar initiative, Five Rivers MetroParks has been awarded over $1.4 million by the Forest Service to assess tree and forest inventories, eliminate invasive plant species, and expand the urban canopy through the planting of native trees and shrubs at Spring Run Conservation Area and Possum Creek MetroPark.

Possum Creek, situated on Frytown Road in southwest Dayton, and Spring Run, located west of Drexel, will benefit from the tree planting efforts aimed at enhancing the local urban environment.

Montgomery County Land Bank Offers Free Trees through Tree Equity Reforestation Program

Collaborating with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry, the Montgomery County Land Bank has initiated the Tree Equity Reforestation Program, providing free trees to homeowners and renters residing in areas identified as “inequitable.”

Since its launch in the spring of 2023, the program has successfully planted approximately 122 trees across the county, with plantings scheduled in both spring and fall seasons.

Julie Harris, the demolition program manager for the Montgomery County Land Bank, highlighted the program’s multifaceted benefits, including reducing energy costs, boosting property values, improving air quality, mitigating water pollution, and reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses.

Thousands of eligible residents in Montgomery County stand to benefit from the free tree program, as strategically planted trees can result in energy savings of up to 25% when positioned correctly.

The Land Bank has already processed 30 applications for the upcoming fall planting round, with applications accepted throughout the year. However, the deadline for fall round submissions is early August.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, a young and healthy tree can provide a cooling effect equivalent to 10 room-sized air conditioners running 20 hours a day, underscoring the importance of urban tree planting initiatives.

The program targets properties located in designated “inequitable” areas within the county, encompassing a significant portion of Dayton and Harrison Township. Each eligible parcel is entitled to receive one free tree as part of the initiative.
