NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. (WECT/Gray News) – The community of North Topsail Beach in North Carolina is in mourning after a tragic incident on the Fourth of July, when a 14-year-old teenager from Goldsboro was swept away while fishing in the New River Inlet.
The teenager, Mainor Perez Velasquez, was fishing with his older brother when he was swept away by the strong currents. Witnesses reported that a nearby boat managed to rescue the older brother, but Mainor was unable to be saved.
The body of Mainor Perez Velasquez was discovered on the base of Camp Lejeune on Sunday morning, bringing a tragic end to the search efforts.
In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, Mainor’s older brother, Yunior Perez Vasquez, has started a GoFundMe to help cover the expenses associated with the tragedy. Speaking to WRAL, Yunior expressed the family’s deep sorrow and the challenges they face in coping with the loss.

North Topsail Beach Police Chief William Younginer highlighted the dangers posed by the area, noting a significant drop-off that can catch swimmers off guard. Despite the tragic outcome, emergency crews worked tirelessly to search for Mainor Perez Velasquez, responding to multiple rescue calls throughout the holiday weekend. Chief Younginer underscored the personal nature of their work, stating, “It becomes personal to us. We don’t want to lose anybody.”
