A tragic incident occurred in North Topsail Beach, North Carolina, on the Fourth of July when a 14-year-old teenager from Goldsboro, North Carolina, was swept away while fishing in the New River Inlet.
Details of the Incident
According to officials with the town of North Topsail Beach, emergency crews responded to the inlet after receiving reports that two brothers had waded out into the water approximately 50 yards. While fishing, the 14-year-old male was swept away and began yelling for help. Witnesses in the area reported that a nearby boat assisted by pulling one brother into the boat.
Recovery of the Body
Tragically, the body of 14-year-old Mainor Perez Velasquez came ashore on the base of Camp Lejeune on Sunday morning. Mainor’s older brother, Yunior Perez Vasquez, has started a GoFundMe to help with expenses during this difficult time.
Heartbreaking Statements
Speaking to WRAL, Yunior expressed his grief, saying, “We’re going to miss him so much. I’m not sure how we’re going to go through this. It’s hard.”

Warning from Authorities
North Topsail Beach Police Chief William Younginer highlighted the dangers in the area, noting that Mainor was not the first swimmer to go missing. He explained that there is a 30-foot drop-off that swimmers may not be able to see, making it a hazardous area for swimming.
Search Efforts and Safety Concerns
Rip currents and rough waters posed a threat along the Carolina coast throughout the holiday weekend. Despite search efforts by rescue crews, including responding to four other rescue calls on the same day, the search for Mainor continued. Chief Younginer emphasised the personal connection to such incidents, stating, “It becomes personal to us. We don’t want to lose anybody.”
