Accident – Death – Obituary News : Syracuse University has recently reached a settlement in a lawsuit filed by a female student who was sexually assaulted in her dorm room in 2020 by another student, Jacob Cohen. The victim, identified as Jane Doe, and her roommate were sleeping in their dorm when Cohen entered their room without permission and assaulted them. Cohen, who was 19 years old at the time of the attack, yanked the victim’s pants down and began kissing her neck. The victim woke up and pushed Cohen away, questioning his presence in her room.

Both women were incapacitated by alcohol at the time of the assault. The victim asked Cohen to leave, and upon returning with others to confront him, she reported the assault to the university’s Department of Public Safety. Despite the incident, Cohen was not removed from the dorm building where he and the two women lived, and no restrictions were placed on his ability to return to the suite or confront the women.

Following the assault, Cohen allegedly harassed one of the victims and engaged in a physical fight with another male resident of the dorm. As a result, Cohen was moved to another dorm to protect him from further altercations. The victim filed a lawsuit against the university, claiming that it did not provide a safe environment or prevent students from being victimized after a sexual assault. Additionally, the university was accused of handling the matter insensitively by retraumatizing the victim during a Zoom call that included Cohen and his legal counsel.

In December 2020, Cohen was criminally charged for the assault and later pleaded guilty to attempted sexual abuse and third-degree rape in 2022. He was sentenced to six months in jail, 10 years of probation, and is required to register as a sex offender for life. The lawsuit against Cohen is still pending.

The terms of the settlement between the victim and Syracuse University were not disclosed in court documents. However, it was confirmed that the lawsuit would be dropped as a result of the settlement. The victim and the university agreed that she could not file another lawsuit against the university regarding its handling of the assault and subsequent investigation.
