Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) recently conducted a significant operation to destroy a substantial quantity of illicit drugs, with a total value exceeding 60 million Liberian Dollars. The event, which took place in the Disco Hill Community of lower Margibi County on Friday, July 8, 2024, marked a crucial milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to combat drug consumption and trafficking.

The assortment of seized substances included heroin, cocaine, kush, marijuana, tramadol, precursor chemicals, and methamphetamine. The quantities of drugs incinerated during the operation were staggering, with 2,951.6 kg of heroin, 541.6 kg of cocaine, 13,381 kg of kush, 1,472.6 kg of marijuana, 2,609.3 kg of tramadol, 1,896.4 kg of precursor chemicals, and 243.6 kg of methamphetamine being destroyed. The estimated street value of these drugs amounted to US$337,180, equivalent to L$64,064,200.

The successful execution of this drug destruction initiative was made possible through the collaborative efforts of international partners, members of the Liberian legislature, and the executive branch. This collective action underscores the commitment to eradicating drug abuse and its detrimental effects from Liberian society.

During the ceremony, Christopher Peters, the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the LDEA, emphasised the significance of the operation in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse. Peters highlighted that the drug incineration was part of the agency’s annual activities to commemorate World Drug Day, aimed at raising awareness about the global drug problem and promoting a drug-free world.

Stephen Kissik, the Assistant Director for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs at the US Embassy near Monrovia, commended the LDEA for their relentless efforts in tackling drug trafficking and substance abuse across Liberia. Kissik reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Liberia’s anti-drug campaign and lauded the effective measures taken by the LDEA in curbing the drug menace.

Grand Bassa County District #5 Representative, Thomas A. Gosuah, II, expressed the House of Representatives’ unwavering dedication to the anti-drug campaign, pledging to safeguard current and future generations from the harmful effects of drug abuse. Atty. Siaffa Bahn Kemokai, II, Special Assistant to the Minister of Justice, assured attendees of the Justice Ministry’s continuous support for the LDEA in its mission to eliminate drug use and trafficking in Liberia.

In a separate incident on June 28, 2024, the LDEA received a report concerning a raid exercise conducted by its officers in the Gardnersville Town Hall Detail area. Tragically, the operation turned chaotic, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man named Christopher Yeayou, also known as “Melvin”, who was found lifeless in a pond of water during the commotion. The Liberia National Police intervened to calm the situation and transported Christopher Yeayou’s body to the JFK Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The LDEA has extended its condolences to the bereaved families and pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident..
