A devastating accident on the Fourth of July resulted in the tragic death of a 25-year-old man while climbing a 13er in San Juan County, Colorado.

The victim, a young man from Cookeville, Tennessee, was scaling Snowdon Peak with a group of friends when the incident occurred. Reports from the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management indicate that the man lost his footing on the ridgeline of the mountain’s east side, plummeting hundreds of feet to his death.

Despite the efforts of his companions to assist him, the hiker succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The Silverton Medical Rescue Team, aided by Flight for Life medics, arrived at the location via helicopter around 5:45 p.m. Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced deceased upon their arrival.

San Juan County Deputy Sheriff Adam Clifton highlighted the fortuitous weather conditions that facilitated the search and recovery operation. Typically prone to afternoon storms, the region experienced clear skies during the mission, allowing for swift and safe aerial assistance.
