NEWPORT TOWNSHIP, Ill. (WLS) — A dramatic high-speed chase originating in Wisconsin and culminating in a fatal crash in Chicago’s north suburbs unfolded on Saturday afternoon, according to a statement from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began when a 32-year-old man from Salem, Wisconsin, was behind the wheel of a stolen Lexus GS400 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. Local authorities attempted to stop the vehicle at around 4:30 p.m., based on a preliminary law enforcement investigation.

In response, the driver accelerated at a high speed, prompting a Pleasant Prairie police officer to initiate a pursuit. The officer deployed a tire-deflating device near the intersection of Kilbourne and Russell roads in unincorporated Zion.

Despite the attempt to stop him, the driver continued to drive recklessly, running a red light at the intersection of Kilbourne Road and Route 173 in Newport Township. It was at this point that the Lexus collided with a GMC Yukon, resulting in a fatal crash.

Tragically, the driver of the Lexus, identified as 32-year-old Tyler Johnson from Salem, Wisconsin, was killed in the collision. No other individuals were in the Lexus at the time of the crash.

In contrast, eight occupants of the GMC Yukon sustained injuries as a result of the crash. A 51-year-old passenger suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver of the GMC, a 30-year-old man, along with six other passengers – a 20-year-old woman, a 28-year-old man, a 15-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl, an 11-year-old girl, and an 8-year-old girl – all suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Autopsy results from the Lake County Coroner’s Office revealed that Johnson succumbed to blunt force injuries sustained in the crash. Additionally, it was discovered that Johnson held a revoked driver’s license and was the subject of an active arrest warrant in Lake County for possessing methamphetamine. He was also linked to several burglaries in the area.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team has taken over the investigation into the incident.
