A Muncie man has been handed a 30-month prison sentence for directing a racial slur at a Black police officer outside city hall. The incident occurred when the officer, who was preparing to enter city hall, was targeted by the man wearing a white face mask with cut-out eye holes. The man, identified as 27-year-old Trenton Austin Whitaker-Blakey, hurled the racial insult at the officer before she sought refuge inside the building.

Following the incident, Whitaker-Blakey was located by police at a local mission and subsequently arrested. During questioning, he claimed that he mistook the officer for a high-ranking official and insisted that the slur was meant for others in the vicinity.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

After a bench trial, Delaware Circuit Court 3 Judge Doug Mawhorr found Whitaker-Blakey guilty of intimidation, a Level 6 felony. The judge imposed the maximum sentence of 30 months, citing the defendant’s affiliation with white supremacy groups and hate organisations like the American Nazi Party.

In his sentencing order, Judge Mawhorr highlighted the Klan-like nature of the mask worn by Whitaker-Blakey and referenced his previous intimidation conviction involving threats against Christians and the Governor of Indiana.

Defendant’s Defence and Appeal

Despite declining to make a statement at the sentencing hearing, Whitaker-Blakey claimed he was being unfairly targeted due to his homelessness and defended his right to free speech. He expressed his intention to appeal both the conviction and sentence.

The defendant was credited for the 109 days he had already spent in the Delaware County Jail. Delaware County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman condemned the incident, emphasising that bigotry and intolerance have no place in society.

Conclusion

The sentencing of Trenton Austin Whitaker-Blakey sends a strong message against hate speech and racial discrimination. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding respect and equality within the community.
